»A new digital magazine for architecture and beyond«
With the conception, design and programming of »uncube«, we have created a new kind of architecture magazine. And triggered a row of awards.
Henkelhiedl had already done many projects for BauNetz Verlag when the largest publisher of architecture, product and interior design topics on the German-language Internet approached us and wanted to invent something together that didn't exist yet.
So an editorial team of four moved into our offices for a few months and was available for feedback at any time during the conception phase, while the team was already preparing the zero issue and other first issues. It was an extremely exciting, very trusting and direct process, which generally suited Henkelhiedl 's way of working.
The Best of Both Worlds
An international, English-language and digital architecture magazine was created, which in its appearance and function eludes the hectic pace of everyday online life through relevance and editorial quality: To follow a print logic at its core, but not to forego digital conveniences, surprises and innovation; to also stand for experimentation and constant development, that was its own aspiration.
From the beginning it was clear that »uncube« should feel like print, with a beginning and an end, a design with large-format images and videos, page-turning and innovative, but convenient to navigate.
Nevertheless, »uncube« should think completely digitally: an integrated reader function makes it possible to concentrate on the pure text, tags create cross-references (via which it will be possible to compile one's own dossiers in the future), the search offers more than just auto-completion via categories and offerings, and the »Responsive Design« also works with dynamic page elements.
Every Issue is One of a Kind
Each issue of the monthly releasing magazine, the heart of »uncube«, is created individually with a content editor developed especially for the project, which enables the complex production between editing, design and programming. To have made this production in the CMS extremely efficient so that it is practical and financially feasible at all. This also makes »uncube« interesting from an economic and strategic point of view.
By the way, this special editor development, adapted to the SixCMS, was developed on the basis of our ideas in cooperation with webXells.
Recognition From All Sides
But it is not only technically that »uncube« stands for experimentation and constant further development. The magazine was to become a real alternative in the media landscape – with a groundbreaking character at best. The extremely high level of approval on the professional side praised the final result not only in terms of technical and design innovation. After all, all sophistication is of no use if the content of an editorial venture does not have an equally great radiance. Which is definitely the case with »uncube«, as the many many monthly issues show just as much as the rather up-to-the-minute reporting in the blog.
Also part of the planning was the development of a social media strategy, as well as the training of the editorial staff. The extremely vital and successful use of Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr proves the considerations right.
